Koch a Rising Star! You don’t have to be a skanky-pants hipster to love the Strand (it’s more than just a store with an over-educated and disdainful staff—it’s an institution). Today, the Strand celebrates its 80th birthday with champagne and birthday cake with the boldface-named and bold-faced: Liz Smith, Gay Talese, Frank McCourt, Adam Gopnik (banned from discussing Paris), oddity Malcolm Gladwell and still-feeling-bad-about-her-neck Nora Ephron. Lovable crank Ed Koch—hey, anybody miss the Koch years? Didn’t think so!—plays M.C. Next! We’re a little too freaked out to investigate this one too much, but there’s a Bang on a Can Marathon down at the World Financial Center (good lord, hasn’t the area suffered enough?). Look forward to “26 hours of uninterrupted live ear-bending border-crossing music from around the corner and across the globe.” In other words: Run for your lives!
