Todd Caliguire, who lost his bid for State Senate in the 40th district Republican primary, has apologized for his role in a late campaign mailing that compared rival Kevin O'Toole to the Rev. Al Sharpton:
"Errors in judgment are sometimes made during heated, hard fought and increasingly bitter campaigns such as the recent Republican primary battle in District 40.
As the candidate, I and no one else bear ultimate responsibility for the things that are said and done on my behalf. After reviewing the facts, it is clear that the desire to win resulted in very poor judgment in the presentation of the Al Sharpton and Kevin O’Toole comparison.
While the issues raised with regard to race-based preferences and the role of affirmative action in the redrawing of District 40 were worthy of discussion, I regret the unnecessarily inflammatory manner in which they were presented. I apologize on behalf of the campaign to anyone may have been offended by this."
