There is great news from the two national parties, which have both decided to hold “green conventions” in 2008. From carbon offsets toconfetti made from recycled paper, the two parties are clearly taking thischallenge seriously and are developing innovative solutions to curb their impact on the environment.
The decisions to hold “green conventions” are significant for two reasons. First, it sets anappropriate example. Although the national conventions are only two, relatively short events, the signal this will send to Americans is a strongone. It shows that our elected leaders are conscious of their collectiveimpact on the environment and are willing to do something about it. Secondly, this shows that environment protection has become an importantissue for both parties. As a life-long Republican, I am veryproud of my own party which has a long and proud history on this issue. Ofcourse, it is the platforms on the environment which the two parties will write in these conventions that are most important. Holding a green convention at least sets the right tone for considering these important environmental issues.
