You can always tell how good an event is going to be by the names on the benefit committee. In the case of the Ghetto Film School (a title we’re just not sure how we feel about) big benefit, you’re gettin’ the Beastie Boys, Sofia Coppola, Spike Lee, Russell Simmons, Sarah Jones, Ben Stiller and Jim Jarmusch. Tonight they honor student filmmakers. Meanwhile, has anyone else noticed how local dimwits throw around the phrase “punk rock” a lot? What do you think they think they mean? One man who would have known all the answers was the great Joe Strummer of the Clash, who passed away in 2002. Today Redemption Song: The Ballad of Joe Strummer, by friend Chris Salewicz, is out on the stands, so therefore a party must follow. Friends and fans will gather at the Niagara Bar in the—where else?—East Village. Rock the Casbah and drink a toast to Sid and Nancy, the Brad and Angelina of the 1980’s ….
