MR. ANTRIUM WORKED ON THE NOVEL for almost two years, getting over 150 pages written on the Metro-North to New Haven visiting his girlfriend—now fiancée—Liz, who is completing her dissertation at Yale. “It’s an amazing place to write as long as you can block out the fact that people are looking over your shoulder and seeing what you’re writing,” he said. Midway through his work, Prep came out. “I didn’t read it, but I heard about it and thought to myself, ‘Just keep your head down and keep writing and get to the end.’ Because you really don’t believe you’ll get to the end. And then when you get there you stand up and say, ‘Holy shit, I wrote a novel!’”

Mr. Antrim’s current employer, ForbesLife editor in chief Christopher Buckley (who enthusiastically blurbed, “A stunning debut in every way”), is an esteemed novelist in his own right, which made the business of writing a novel while working full time that much easier. “I have friends that definitely have to do that whole screen-switch thing,” he said. “Chris is like this bright shining example of a magazine editor in chief that jazzily cranks out novels and has all kinds of other interests. He’s very supportive of doing your own writing on the side. I feel really lucky. We can go out to lunch at Knickerbockers and talk about our writing together.”

After a time renting in the West Village, Mr. Antrim recently bought a two-bedroom railroad apartment in Clinton Hill which he will move into this week. During renovations, he’s been sleeping at friends’, traveling to New Haven, and “showering at Forbes.” His wedding in August will be in Vermont, proving a busy summer; “Summer ’08 will be wonderfully dull,” he said. He’s already at work on his next novel, but demurred to say what it’s about. “I need to study how other writers handle that question,” he said. “I think if I talk about it it will blow up in my face.”

In the meantime, he’s looking forward to the book’s reception. “I keep waiting for them to offer to have the book party on [Steve Forbes’ 151-foot yacht] The Highlander,” he joked. “But so far … nothing.”
