A small group of New Jersey college students, seeking to live under the governance of the Republicans, have formed a Facebook group, Northwest Jersey Secessionist Movement (NJSM). The new state would include Morris, Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon and Passaic counties, as well as parts of Union, Somerset, Bergen counties. In all, about 2.2 million people — enough for a Governor, two U.S. Senators, three seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, and (using current standards) a state legislature of ten State Senators and twenty members of the General Assembly.
From the group page:
“Time and time again, the state of New Jersey has proven itself to be ‘too blue’ for us north westerners: Corzine, Lautenberg, Torricelli, Florio, McGreevey, Menendez, our entire state Supreme Court, etc.”
“It is time for us to secede and to establish our own conservative-libertarian state, with the perfect balance of economic and social freedoms, a haven for us long oppressed, freedom-loving, patriotic Jerseyans and Americans. From our capital city of Morristown, we will become a shining beacon of freedom to all who seek refuge from big government!”
“The new territory of Northwest Jersey includes all of Morris, Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, and Passaic counties, as well as large swaths of Bergen and Somerset counties. We are proud to report that the towns of Summit, New Providence and Springfield of Union County have also seceded. Yes folks, the hometown of Governor Corzine (Summit) has joined us, and we have converted his home into a spacious ‘public comfort station.’
While even our most gullible readers ought not buy this scenario — though New Jersey Democrats might be glad to unload that part of the state — on a holiday weekend, it might still be fun to speculate on what the new state might look like.
