Bramnick wants county prosecutors to be in touch with ICE

In the wake of the Newark murders that rocked New Jersey, Assembly Minority Whip Jon Bramnick wants federal authorities to know if an illegal immigrant has been charged with a crime here in New Jersey.

Bramnick announced today that he plans to introduce legislation that will require county prosecutors to notify the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency whenever they charge an illegal immigrant with a crime in their jurisdictions. He used the murder of three Newark college students, allegedly by Jose Carranza, an illegal immigrant, as one justification for the bill.

“It is a very basic concept that when a local law enforcement official is aware that an individual in their custody has violated a federal law, that they should notify the federal authorities,” said Bramnick.

There has been speculation that Bramnick is mulling a bid for the Republican US Senate nomination. He previously said he “hasn’t ruled it out.”

Update: state Sen. Paul Sarlo has also issued a press release calling for a similar measure.
