11 a.m. Brooklyn NAACP and partners will distribute free backpacks to public school students at Brooklyn Borough Hall, 209 Joralemon Street, in Brooklyn.

11 a.m. Housing Partnership Development Corporation will hand over keys to new three-family affordable townhomes at 85 Vernon Avenue between Tompkins and Marcy streets in Brooklyn.

11:30 a.m. Assemblyman Adriano Espaillat will announce the creation of the Washington Heights and Inwood Energy Task Force at 207th Street and Vermilyea Avenue.

Noon. Sen. Jeff Klein will release a study of sex offenders residing in the NYC Family Shelter System outside 2027 Broadway at 104th Street.

Noon. Manhattan borough president and youth volunteers will sort and fill backpacks with school supplies for homeless children at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center’s Crystal Palace entrance, 11th Avenue between 35th and 36th streets.

12:30 p.m. At City Hall, Speaker Christina Quinn and members of the City Council will vote on legislation that would increase penalties for those who dispose of household garbage in public trash bins; require all payments to city contractors over $25,000 to be paid electronically; make a technical correction to the Brooklyn Navy Yard/North Brooklyn Empire Zone; and establish a Business Improvement District in Sunnyside, Queens.

2 p.m. A wake for Firefighter Robert Beddia will take place at the Harmon Funeral Home, 571 Forest Avenue, on Staten Island. There will be another service at 7 p.m.

2 p.m. A wake for Firefighter Joseph Graffagnino will take place at the Andrew Torregrossa & Sons Funeral Home, 1305 79th Street, in Brooklyn. There will be another service at 7 p.m.

5 p.m. Common Ground will host an opening reception for an exhibition of artwork created by formerly homeless tenants at The Prince George Ballroom Gallery, 15 East 27th Street between Fifth and Madison avenues.

5:30 p.m. Sen. Barack Obama will celebrate the Brooklyn campaign kickoff at The Marriott Hotel, 333 Adams Street, Brooklyn.

6 p.m. Furniture design manufacturer Herman Miller will host a silent auction of designer created “Eames” chairs to benefit the Peace House Foundation at Herman Miller’s New York National Design Center, 1177 Sixth Avenue between 45th and 46th streets.
