‘Spin Rage’ Arrest at Upper East Side Equinox

A Manhattan man has been charged with assault in a case his alleged victim is calling "spin rage," after an incident during a spinning class at the Equinox health club on East 85th Street.

"It is the loss of all self control by someone who is just sharing not a road in this case but sharing a stationary bike facility," attorney [for alleged victim Stuart Sugarman] Samuel Davis said.

There's music and excitement at a routine spin class, but Sugarman says on the night of Aug. 15, his workout spun out of control.

"This fella came in and sat down and he didn't like the fact that there was a lot of excitement going on and for whatever reason, he targeted me," Sugarman said.

"Taking the bike and myself and hitting me so hard into the sheetrock wall that we crashed to the wall."

Chris Carter is charged with assault; his lawyer would only say that Mr. Sugarman had a "vivid imagination."

Perhaps adding credence to that claim, Equinox itself terminated Mr. Sugarman's membership after the incident; they had no comment on the termination but are themselves likely to be charged in a civil proceeding with failing to come to Mr. Sugarman's aid after the alleged assault.
