Orange City Councilman At-Large Donald Page wants Mayor Mims Hackett to resign. He also wants to succeed Hackett.
"On Nov. 1st, I was planning to formally announce my candidacy for Mayor of the City of Orange, before yesterday's developments unfolded," said Page in a release. "As of now, I still plan on that date to formally declare for the May, 2008 election. If actions warrant, I will move up this timetable and be prepared to run for the unexpired portion of the current term. At this time, I am still awaiting answers on what the procedures are in the event of his resignation."
Law enforcement authorities arrested Hackett last week on a charge of bribery.
"The people of Orange deserve honest government that responds to the needs of its citizens and taxpayers," said Page. "Hackett has failed to provide that leadership. I implore Mr. Hackett to do the right thing and immediately leave office. I would like to conclude by stating that I do send my best wishes to Mr. Hackett's family at this troubling time. I know this must be very difficult for them and I do offer my prayers and well wishes."
