The NYPD confirmed they’re investigating an incident at 250 Broadway which began about a half hour ago. A City Hall source said a white powdery substance may have been found on the 17th floor and staffers there may have been sent home.
UPDATE: This Reuters story says the package in question was found outside Christine Quinn’s office. Quinn, when I saw her on her way out of City Hall, referred my question to the police department. A spokesman there said the incident is still being investigated.
Here is the City Council’s email.

Re: 17th floor Evacuation
Earlier today there was a report of a suspicious package on the 17th floor of 250 Broadway. As a precaution, NYPD and council staff, asked folks on the 17th floor to evacuate the premises immediately.
According to the NYPD, the suspicious package was removed from the premises for closer inspection. The NYPD’s report concluded, that the threat was thoroughly investigated, and the suspicion proved to be unfounded.
If you were affected by the incident, we apologize for the inconvenience it may have caused. However, it is now save to return to your offices on the 17th floor.
