Bring tissues and Cliff bars to the movies, because the season of epic historical period-costumed tearjerkers is upon us! (Though we’re guessing none can beat Lust, Caution, Ang Lee’s epic historical period-costumed tearjerker with a side of acrobatic sex.) Atonement, based on the Ian McEwan novel and starring Keira Knightley—the movie that annoying “smart types” will tell you “is the one movie I’m going to see this month”—gets an advance screening at the Film Society of Lincoln Center, followed by a Q&A with actor James McAvoy and screenwriter Christopher Hampton. If you get stuck for lobby flirtation chatter, get some extra butter on your popcorn and bring up Mr. McEwan’s stirring defense of his pal Martin Amis, who’s in hot water with the political correctness police for criticizing Islam.
[Atonement screening, Clearview Cinema, 62nd Street and Broadway, 7 p.m., www.filmlinc.com]
