It looks like a primary in the third Congressional district may not be such a sure thing after all.
Not if Lockheed Martin vice-President Chris Myers, who lives in Burlington County, impresses members of the Ocean County Republican Party enough to win their endorsement.
Myers, who lives in Burlington County and is the presumptive favorite to get that county party’s nod for a congressional bid, has sent his resume to Ocean County GOP Chairman George Gilmore and will participate in a candidate screening process this weekend.
The Ocean County Republican Committee will convene on Monday to vote on the candidate it will endorse to replace U.S. Rep. Jim Saxton.
Gilmore would not say whether this means that Ocean County, which has never had a Congressman, will throw its support behind Myers, the Deputy Mayor of Medford, rather than pick one of its own. Gilmore said that his organization would screen any candidate from any of the three counties that make up the district – Ocean, Burlington or Camden.
“I’ve said from the beginning that if the three county organizations can get behind one county candidate, that would be great,” said Gilmore.
Other potential candidates under consideration in Ocean County include Freeholders Joe Vicari and Jack Kelly; former lottery commissioner Virginia Haines, Assemblyman Brian Rumpf, Toms River Councilman Maurice Hill and Army Reserve Lieutenant Mario Boemio.
