Weingarten won’t run for Congress

Former Assemblyman Joel M. Weingarten of Millburn on Wednesday released a statement that he would not run for the 7th district Congressional seat being vacated at the end of next year by U.S. Rep. Mike Ferguson.

He said his concerns include homeland security, taxes and the loss of core American values, among them Constituional rights.

“While I have a clear vision for our nation that encompasses these matters,” said Weingarten, a Republican, “I have decided not to pursue elective office in 2008.”

The early frontrunners in a Republican primary race are state Sen. Minority Leader Leonard Lance of Hunterdon County and Kate Whitman, daughter of former Gov. Christie Whitman, of Somerset County.

“I am humbled that so many have expressed their support for me to once again hold legislative office,” Weingarten said. “However, on a personal level I have concluded that now is not the right time for me to re-enter political life. Instead, I will continue to address my business commitments and family responsibilities, and will of course speak-out strongly on the matters that I believe are most important to the future of our country.”
