In another black eye for the troubled Burlington County Bridge Commission, the Burlington County Times reports that its chairman, John Comegno, was arrested for drunk driving last night.
The report says that Comegno struck mailboxes along a Moorestown road last night and fled the scene. He’s been charged with five infractions: driving while intoxicated, refusing to submit to an alcohol test, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident and reckless driving.
Comegno, a lawyer, was appointed to the troubled commission one year ago and has relatively few political connections. According to a resume distributed when he was nominated for the position, he served on the finance committees of state Sen. Diane Allen and then-Assemblyman Bill Baroni, and is a member of the Burlington County Young Republicans.
The commission suffered from a major scandal after lobbyist Robert Stears admitted overbilling it by $1 million.
