CONCERTS:
For a band whose members are barely old enough to vote, let alone drink, the Nashville-based garage-punk quartet Be Your Own Pet has made quite a name for itself, garnering praise from Sonic Youth and comparisons to beloved riot grrrl groups of yore. Tickets for their Feb. 20 Mercury Lounge show just went on sale Wednesday, so grab them before it’s too late — notable shows at the tiny Mercury Lounge tend to sell out. Also on sale as of Wednesday are tickets for a March 26 Bowery Ballroom performance by Jesus and Mary Chain-influenced duo the Raveonettes.
Canadian bands seem to be all the rage these days, so you can probably expect Tokyo Police Club to become a ubiquitous name on the ever so difficult to keep up with indie rock circuit, especially now that they’re readying a debut full-length due out soon on the Nebraska-based mid-90s emo progenitor Saddle Creek Records, which, for better or for worse, gave now-famous acts like Bright Eyes and Cursive their starts. They play the Bowery Ballroom on April 20 and the Music Hall of Williamsburg on April 21. Tickets for both shows are on sale this Friday at noon.
Are there actually still goths in New York City? This question will be answered on June 20 and 21 when the Cure plays Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall, respectively. Tickets for the rescheduled Madison Square Garden date (the Cure had cancelled their fall tour because their new songs just weren’t sounding right live or something like that), have been on sale for awhile, but the presale for the Radio City show starts Friday at 10 a.m. (the regular sale begins the following morning). Cure concerts can kind of be a snooze fest, but they’re still worth it: the last time this reporter saw them in the summer of 2004, they played "Just Like Heaven" and "Boys Don’t Cry"!
