Not an easy New Year’s in Africa. Jeffrey Gettleman, The Times‘ East African correspondent, has two breaking–and unrelated–stories above the fold today on nytimes.com: one on the continued unrest in Kenya that led to the burning of more than 40 people inside a church; and the other about an American diplomat who was killed on New Year’s Eve in Sudan, where there’s rising anti-American sentiment. The stories were filed within 15 minutes of each other (the Kenya story at 2:42pm, the other at 2:25pm).
Oh, and Richard Oppel has his first Baghdad dateline since November.
