Believe it or not, there’s been some rather interesting news coming out of Palm Beach lately. Billed as the Floridian island’s “wedding of the year,” the planned nuptials of heiress Alexandra Fisher, 28, and Joshua Bailer, 33, a Wall Street banker, were axed at the last minute.
Like a scene out of Great Expectations, the couple’s 300 guests had already gathered at the Breakers hotel when Jeff Fisher, the father of the bride, had to make the sad announcement. “Don’t worry. You’re all here. We love you. Let’s party on,” he told the guests. (Except for those of the would-be groom. Why in a sec.)
So that’s exactly what they did—blue-bloods, after all, have never been ones to let good booze go to waste. That, and the affair cost close to seven figures. Champagne flowed, lamb chops were eaten and partygoers danced until close to midnight, according to the Palm Beach Post.
The wedding was reportedly called off because Mr. Fisher, who recently sold his hotel company, Innkeepers, for $1.5 billion, didn’t like Mr. Bailer’s request for lifelong alimony if the pair divorced. The latter man refused to go through with the ceremony without such an agreement. And that was that. Ms. Fisher eventually showed up, at around 10 p.m., wearing a black dress.
After shuffling into one of the three ballrooms rented for the affair, Ms. Fisher raised her glass before the flower girls gathered at her feet and said: “Break their hearts my pride and hope, break their hearts and have no mercy!”
Okay, she never did that last part. But it would have been pretty cool if she had.
