The early birds at the New York Film Critics Circle rush to dole out the first awards of the year, which they’ve already announced will be won by No Country for Old Men (best picture), Daniel Day-Lewis (nope, can’t escape him!), Javier Bardem (best supporting actor), The Lives of Others (best foreign film), we could go on, snore! In a press release, the Critics Circle, which is comprised entirely of journalists, notes modestly that they are “a principled alternative to the Oscars, honoring esthetic merit in a forum that is immune to commercial and political pressures.” Just keep telling yourselves that!
