We can’t yet give a thumbs-up or -down on Be Kind Rewind, the latest metafictional movie (opening Friday) from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind director Michel Gondry. But we can give our verdict on the film’s website: totally excellent and lots of fun.
The new film is about Jerry (Jack Black), who unintentionally destroys the tapes in the video store where his friend Mike (Mos Def) works. The pair then set about remaking all of the missing films (a process called “sweding”). On the film’s website, you can not only view the trailer and various movie clips that Def and Black reproduced (King Kong, Rush Hour, Driving Miss Daisy) but also insert a photo of yourself on a film’s box cover, check out step-by-step instructions on how to make your own sweded website, and even sign up to receive a phone call from Jack Black.
Here’s hoping the movie is just as inventive and entertaining.
