Who needs the Olympics!? The World Police & Fire Games will be coming in 2011 to our fair city, bringing with them close to 20,000 cops and firefighters to compete in “everything from archery down to wrestling,” said Jim Carney, the event’s 2011 president, not to mention women from across the eastern seaboard angling to get in on some of the, um, action. Tonight, the men raise money for this imminent infusion of un-moisturized, real testosterone at the Third Annual Benefit Gala for the games, taking place, oh dear, at the Marriot Marquis Times Square. The games, a biennial event held in cities around the world, exist to “create camaraderie throughout the whole world among policemen and firefighters,” said Mr. Carney. And they also have loftier goals: “I can’t just say world peace, but when you see how countries can work together … It’s just an incredible thing to see. That’s the purpose of sport. It just gives you goosebumps when you see how close we can all come together.” Hot damn, sir, we have goosebumps already.
