At a press conference in his midtown office just now, Eliot Spitzer said he apologized “sincerely” for what he had done.
“There is much more to be done and I cannot allow my private failings to disrupt the people’s work,” he said.
And, moments later: “I am resigning from the office of governor.”
The official handover of power to Lt. Governor David Paterson will happen on Monday. Spitzer said this was at Paterson’s request.
The last thing he said was, “I thank the public once again for the privilege of serving.”
He walked out without taking any questions.
