Stellllllaaaa! Gossip maven Liz Smith is among the honoree’s at the Stella Adler Studio’s Stella by Starlight Gala Benefit (phew, you got that?), joining Martin Sheen to receive awards for social and cultural activism. “They must be desperate,” deadpanned Ms. Smith when we called her up. “I think [my award] is for advancing culture or something, which is a great laugh.” That said, “I was a great admirer of Stella,” she continued. “I only ever met her once in my life, about two or three years before she died. This studio is supported by the most incredible people. It was Marlon Brando’s favorite thing. It was one of the things he would really show up for.” Ms. Smith proceeded to offer up a timely metaphor for the city’s culture of fund-raising: “You know how in India, they’d put out a goat to catch the tiger?” she said. “That’s what fund-raising parties are like. If they honor you, you’re the goat.”
