Here’s a brilliant idea: You know what would make the conspicuously scripted MTV reality drama, The Hills, better? Old People!
Over the Hills—“a word for word reenactment of The Hills using elderly actors”—is produced by Heavy.com, a video site whose head of programming happens to be former Maxim editor Jimmy Jellinek. Maybe it’s the maturity factor or the lack of reliance on deadpan stares for dramatic effect, but the geriatric version of The Hills is actually … kind of great.
The older actors’ faces, despite the wrinkles and age spots, get a far greater range of facial expressions than their early-twenties counterparts, who seem to only possess a disturbing, one-dimensional detachment when delivering canned lines. And acting skills are apparently another one of those things that come with age: the gray cast’s “reenactments” of the pseudo-drama’s key scenes got us a little choked up. Like when the older Spencer proposes to older Heidi on the beach, we felt like, oh, well, kind of like someone might actually be getting engaged.
Bet Lauren Conrad won’t be so thrilled about being portrayed as the only character with a walker, but hopefully even she’ll chuckle at the scene of a hunched over old lady at “Le Deaux” shouting “The sex tapes! The sex tapes!”
