Feelin’ ga-ga from galas? Relief arrives in the form of Daphne Merkin, prolific chronicler of the tormented inner lives of all sister girlfriends, who appears at the 92nd Street Y to discuss “Breaking News in the Jewish World and Beyond.” (But what about our complicated reactions as women to Hugh Hefner’s girlfriends’ reality show, a subject she tackled in ELLE recently?) Then, it’s the most deflating spectacle of the year: the folks at Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus parade those poor elephants through the midtown tunnel to Madison Square Garden, where people will bring their children to watch these majestic beasts wear tiaras for 12 days.
