We caught up with Tina Fey last night at the Museum of Modern Art. The room was littered with teddy bears and letter-blocks in honor of the just-ended premiere of the movie Baby Mama in which she stars. How’d it go, Tina?
“It was a disaster! People ran out!” she exclaimed. “Just kidding! It went great.” Zing!
Her biggest-cheese boss, NBC Universal president Jeff Zucker was riding pretty high, hanging out with his high-school buddy John Sykes. It seemed like a downer when we asked him about his ongoing feud with Project Runway executive producer Harvey Weinstein, but that’s our job! He wouldn’t say anything about anyone but Tina.
“The movie was a lot of fun, a lot of laughs and had a great heart, which is what Tina Fey is all about. And this is like an S.N.L. reunion!” he said, looking around. Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, Rachel Dratch, Jimmy Fallon, Chris Kattan, Molly Shannon, and Lorne Michaels were all ranging around the place.
“I like those girls,” said Chevy Chase about Ms. Fey and her costar, Amy Poehler. “I’m all for surrogacy, in fact I tried to get myself involved many times, but nothing seems to happen.”
“I’ll tell you this much,” he said. “I would not let Amy be a surrogate for my kids. She’s too small, I don’t want those genes.”
He hasn’t got them! Turning to his daughter, who appeared to be about five feet tall without heels, he said: “This is my middle daughter, she’s the shortest of ours. As a matter of fact, I have three daughters, all totally natural births.”
Then he threw back his head and screamed: “Aw shit!” He was apparently imitating his wife in labor. “You know, it was that kind of thing.”
Ms. Fey and Ms. Poehler both arrived with their proud parents. In fact, when we asked Ms. Poehler what else she might be planning to see at Tribeca, she said, “Oh, I don’t know. Right now I’m just trying to find my parents!”But Ms. Dratch provided just as good a foil as she walked through the door.
“We’ve known each other a long time so we have a very high comfort level,” Ms. Fey said about her friend and co-star Ms. Poehler. “And also in my contract it says that I’ll only work with people that are two inches shorter than me. So that worked out.”
