Senate President (and former Governor) Richard Codey went one for two in Essex County mayoral races on Tuesday. He backed Eldridge Hawkins, Jr. in his successful bid for Mayor of Orange, but his endorsed candidate for Mayor of Montclair, Joyce Michaelson, lost.
Hawkins is the son of Eldridge Hawkins, an East Orange attorney who was Codey’s running in the old 26th legislative district in 1973 – the first time Codey ran for the State Assembly – and again in 1975. Hawkins, Jr. succeeds Mims Hackett, who ran on a ticket with Codey in 2001 and 2003 (and in the 2007 primary; Hackett dropped his bid for re-election to the Assembly following his arrest on bribery charges.)
In Orange, mayoral candidate Janice Morrell, who had the support of Rep. Rob Andrews, finished fourth in a field of six.
