ONLY 22 HOURS, 10 MINUTES AND 30 SECONDS UNTIL 1st ikea store in NEW YORK CITY OPENS ITS DOORS in BROOKLYN

Grand Opening Ceremony includes Local Officials, Flag-raisings, Swedish Log-Sawing

WHAT: IKEA Brooklyn officially opens its doors at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 18. The 346,000-square-foot store employs 500 coworkers and features 10,000 exclusively designed home furnishings all under one roof, a 450-seat IKEA Restaurant– with views of lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty – a supervised children’s play area, 6.5 acres of waterfront esplanade, and approximately 1,400 parking spaces. Until now, New York City customers have been shopping at IKEA stores in Elizabeth, NJ; Hicksville, NY; and Paramus, NJ; or online at www.IKEA-USA.com.

TIME: Entertainment for customers in line 6:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m.

DETAILS:

Ø The first 35 adults (18 and over) in line at the IKEA Brooklyn grand opening on June 18, 2008 will receive a free EKTORP three-seat sofa. The next 100 adults in line at IKEA Brooklyn will receive a free POÄNG armchair; and the 1st 100 children will receive a free FAMNIG heart-shaped soft toy. The 1st 2,500 people to enter the store will receive thousands of dollars worth of IKEA gift cards, with individual gift cards ranging from $10 to $250, or vouchers towards a free cinnamon bun, hotdog or frozen yogurt treat

Ø Entertainment, activities and promotions for customers in line, including performances by the Serious Business Dance Troupe, Conjunto Guantano (Afro-Cuban Jazz Band), and Brooklyn’s own musician and songwriter Jonathan Coulton (composer of the song “IKEA”)

Ø Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn will join IKEA North America President Pernille Lopez, and IKEA Brooklyn store manager Mike Baker in the official opening ceremony that will inaugurate the new store

Ø Other state and local officials scheduled to attend include New York City Councilwoman Sara Gonzales who will raise the U.S. flag; Swedish Consul to the U.S. Ulf Hjer
tonsson who will raise the Swedish flag; and Red Hook leaders who will raise the New York flag

Ø $10,000 donation presented to Red Hook’s Conover House, a supportive housing program that provides stable, nurturing environment for families in need

Ø IKEA Brooklyn officially opens to shoppers streaming in lobby, greeted by IKEA coworkers
