Representative Charlie Rangel, who has recently faced a flurry of tough , intense press coverage, is having what appears to be an enormous birthday party for himself at Central Park’s Tavern on the Green on Wednesday, August 6.

New Yorkers in the group include the three upstate progressives, Dan Maffei, Eric Massa and Jon Powers, plus Mike McMahon, who is running for the Staten Island seat Vito Fossella is vacating. The other candidates on the train (pictured above) are John Boccieri of Ohio, Debbie Halvorson and Dan Seals of Illinois, Linda Stender of New Jersey, Ashwin Madia of Minnesota and Walter Minnick of Idaho.
People on the gala committee list, which consists of close to 150 names, include Bill Lynch, listed as a chair; Carl McCall and Ron Perelman, vice chairs; Randi Weingarten host; Chevy and Jaynie Chase, Bob Kerrey, Howard Rubinstein, Larry Silverstein, Jonathan Tisch, Mo Vaughn, Roger Toussaint, and Jonathan Tisch, sponsors; and Reverend Calvin Butts, David Dinkins, Fred Hochberg, Basil Paterson and Jeffrey Sachs as patrons.
