Bayonne candidates avoiding Obama

Bayonne is a strongly Democratic city that hasn't backed a Republican since Thomas Kean in 1985. Still, the major contenders in a non-partisan special election for Mayor this November — all Democrats — have internal polling that has caused them to avoid links to the Democratic candidate for President, Barack Obama. Some Bayonne Democrats — at least before the recent financial crisis — have suggested that Republican John McCain could do well in this very blue collar municipality, where John Kerry beat George W. Bush 57%-43% in 2004.
