Passaic Councilman indicted, arrested

Passaic City Councilman Gerardo Fernandez was arrested this morning following his indictment on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice, U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie announced today. Federal prosecutors allege that Fernandez gave false testimony during a grand jury probe of corruption in Passaic. Passaic Mayor Sammy Rivera resigned earlier this year after pleading guilty to corruption charges connected to Operation Broken Boards, an FBI sting operation that snagged political figures throughout the state, including then-Assembly Deputy Speaker Alfred Steele and then-Assemblyman Mims Hackett, who was also the Mayor of Orange.
