Yesterday, we found ourselves confused over the news that Johnny Depp would be playing Tonto in a Jerry Bruckheimer-produced The Lone Ranger. Why would such a great actor be willing to play a sidekick role in a silly and unnecessary big-budget adaptation? Now, over at Ain’t-It-Cool News, we might have gotten our answer.
According to a “source,” George Clooney has shown “a lot of interest” in the project, and naturally the feelings are reciprocal from Disney. Obviously all of this is wildly unconfirmed, but it almost makes sense. Perhaps Mr. Depp signed on to the role because he knew he’d get the chance to work with Mr. Clooney. (Or maybe he just wanted the chance to ride a horse.) Either way, a possible pairing of Mr. Depp and Mr. Clooney has us quite excited. We can only imagine their interplay together and we have a feeling it would simply pop off the screen. Plus two actors of that caliber can take any lousy script (we’re assuming here) and make it wholly entertaining.
A quick look at Mr. Clooney’s IMDB page shows that he certainly has room not only for another movie in the next few years, but also another moneymaker. He’s always taken the “one for them, few for me” approach, and since his last few films have been for him, it’s likely that Mr. Clooney needs to refill the coiffeurs. The one drawback to the project? Even someone as ostensibly cool as George Clooney will sound cheesy yelling “Hi-yo Silver, away!”
