If you’re wondering how we got to the point of near economic Armageddon, perhaps you should check out Naomi Klein’s Shock Doctrine. The book, recently released in paperback, illustrates the fundamentals of what Ms. Klein has termed “disaster capitalism.” Her theory posits that neo-liberal capitalism thrives off shocks to the system that can appear in the form of a natural disaster, terrorist attack, war or an economic crisis.
In what seems to be appropriate timing, Culture Czar favorite Michael Winterbottom will make Ms. Klein’s book into a full-length documentary. Mr. Winterbottom’s documentary will presumably expand on the short film that was made by brothers Alfonso and Jonas Cuarón last year. Like that short film, Ms. Klein will be narrating the proceedings in her mannered monotone, which suggests that the end of the world is indeed just around the corner. Who wants popcorn?
