ALBANY—The Capitol is still trying to make sense of what happened in a leaders' meeting earlier today—it was long on theater but short on conclusions.
The legislature—specially convened today—will not act on David Paterson's proposal to bridge a budget deficit. I caught up with State Senator Tom Duane, a Manhattan Democrat, outside the senate chamber. He took a wide view:
"It's hard for anyone to look good with things so bad," he said. "I could sort of understand where everybody was coming from, even the Republicans, but I think that public service required that additional effort to step up and that didn't happen."
