George H.W. Bush named Michael Chertoff to serve as the U.S. Attorney in 1990, and at the suggestion of Sen. Bill Bradley, remained in the post until 1994. He later served as Special Counsel to the Senate Whitewater Committee.
George W. Bush named him to the Third Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in 2003, and became U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security in 2005 after the nomination of Bernard Kerik was withdrawn.
