In a likely preview of a Democratic line of attack in next year’s mayoral election, the chairman of the City Council’s committee on public safety, Peter Vallone Jr., says he’s concerned that Michael Bloomberg’s proposal to eliminate the incoming class of police cadets will make the city less safe, and less economically viable.
“The fastest way to hurt the economy even more is to make our streets less safe,” he said via text message. “Criminals are like cockroaches, you can’t step on them and hope they go away. If you give them the opportunity they will crawl back out and if we cut our police, that will happen.”
