CHARLES PERCY

Illinois Republican Charles Percy, 89, was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1966 and re-elected twice. Mentioned as a possible presidential and vice presidential candidate early in his career, he was serving as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee when he lost his bid for re-election in 1984 to Democrat Paul Simon. His son-in-law, Democrat Jay Rockefeller, has represented West Virginia in the U.S. Senate since 1985.
