Could It Be the Return of Kevin Kline? Please!

Our favorite Upper East Side teenagers were in rare form last night during a particularly jam-packed episode of Gossip Girl.

Our favorite Upper East Side teenagers were in rare form last night during a particularly jam-packed episode of Gossip Girl. But jokes about crashing airplanes to dispose of adversaries, conversations about purchasing anthrax on the black market, a near rape and the ripe potential for student-teacher sex (Dan Humphrey, you dirty rascal!) didn’t really faze us at all. What did however, was something Blair’s father said to his daughter while they were getting to their seats for a performance of Tristan and Isolde. After Blair’s cell phone rang, he lightly scolded Blair for having the ringer on by reminding her of "the Kevin Kline incident".

Sigh. Talk about someone who needs to make more movies! Where have you gone Mr. Kline? An extended cameo appearance in Definitely, Maybe, though awesome, is not nearly enough to quell our thirst for your intensely perfect thespian charms. You should be more than just the punchline to a joke on The CW! So consider the news we read this morning something along the lines of pure kismet. According to Variety, Mr. Kline has signed on for the film adaptation of Jonathan Ames’ The Extra Man from American Splendor writer/directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini.

A former columnist for the New York Press, Mr. Ames’ second novel was published in 1998 and deals with a sexually confused young man who moves to New York and winds up living with a failed playwright… on the Upper East Side! (Eerie!) Of course, there is a twist: the older gentleman works as an escort for rich widows–he’s an extra man (hence the title)–while the young man has a proclivity for cross-dressing. Cue the comedic hijinks! Naturally, Mr. Kline will play the role of the playwright; we can already picture the righteously excellent beard he’ll grow for the part and his corduroy enhanced wardrobe. There Will Be Blood‘s Paul Dano will play opposite Mr. Kline, as the young man. So if you’ve always wanted to see Mr. Dano dress like a woman, this could be your chance. Other cast members include "Boats ‘n Hoes" singer John C. Reilly, and a little actress named Katie Holmes. While the appearance of Ms. Holmes puts an immediate damper on our enthusiasm for this project, it should be noted that she was also in Batman Begins, and that still wound up working out all right. Here’s hoping The Extra Man is the Kevin Kline revival we’ve been waiting for. Could It Be the Return of Kevin Kline? Please!
