GEORGE MCGOVERN

George McGovern, 86, was the Democratic nominee for President in 1972. Frank Lautenberg's role as a McGovern fundraiser earned him a place on Richard Nixon's infamous enemies list. South Dakota voters elected McGovern to the Senate in 1962 and re-elected him in 1968 and 1974. But in 1980, McGovern lost his seat to Republican James Abdnor.

McGovern was born seven days after Hatfield, on July 19, 1922.
