MILLICENT FENWICK

For a while it looked like the irrepressible pipe-smoking 72-year-old Congresswoman from Bernardsville was headed to the U.S. Senate. Millicent Fenwick narrowly survived a primary from conservative Jeff Bell and was hampered by her refusal to accept PAC money. The economy took a hit during Ronald Reagan's mid-term election, and the more youthful Frank Lautenberg emerged a a tough campaigner. In what turned out to be a Democratic year, Lautenberg won a seat in the U.S. Senate by just under 69,923 votes, a 51%-48% margin.
