In 1999, Lautenberg announced his retirement from the United States Senate. His decision not to seek re-election to a fourth term set up a primary between Wall Street mega millionaire Jon Corzine and former Gov. Jim Florio. In the general election, Corzine won a close race against U.S. Rep. Bob Franks. Lautenberg's friends say he regretted not running almost immediately and hated life outside the public arena.
