Republican Bob Griffin was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1966 and re-elected in 1972. He was serving as Senate Minority Whip when he decided to retire in 1978. Griffin later changed his mind and returned to the race, but Michigan voters instead elected Democrat Carl Levin. Griffin, who had hoped to be named to the U.S. Supreme Court if his close friend, Gerald Ford, won the presidency in 1976, is four months older than Bob Dole.
