The new U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Kenneth Salazar, will visit New Jersey on Friday to join U.S. Senator Robert Menendez for a tour of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. During his Senate confirmation hearing, Menendez asked Salazar for a commitment to make the trip and examine the possibility of re-opening Liberty's crown and the closed portion of Ellis Island.
Salazar served as the U.S. Senator from Colorado from 2005 until his resignation yesterday. As Chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in 2003-04, Governor Jon Corzine played a key role in Salazar's campaign against the Republican candidate, beer magnate Pete Coors.
With Salazar's resignation and the upcoming retirement of Florida Senator Mel Martinez, Menendez could be the lone Hispanic Senator in January 2011.
