State Senate Lumbers Into Session

ALBANY—Angelo Aponte, who is serving as secretary of the now-Democratic-controlled State Senate, just breezed through the press room to introduce himself to reporters.

The legislature is back in session today, but activity is only slowly picking up. Much of the focus in recent days has been on hiring new staff and the transition – work which would have ideally been done in November or December but wasn't, because the chamber's leadership was not unclear.

This is the time of year when one-house bills are usually cranked out, one Senate staffer pointed out to me.

Aponte told us he did not go to the inauguration because he had too much work to do. The major order of business for today, he said, is to finalize and publicize lists of committee membership. State Senate Lumbers Into Session
