Council Committee Picks City Clerk, New Chairs

The Rules Committee of the City Council just voted, 11-3, to approve Michael McSweeney of Queens—Christine Quinn’s favored candidate—as the new city clerk.

Also, there were several changes to chairmanships of various committees, unanimously approved.

McSweeney and the committee changes have to be approved by the full City Council, which should happen later today.

Here are the committee changes:

Miguel Martinez will now chair the Civil Service and Labor Committee.

Jimmy Vacca will now chair the Fire and Criminal Justice Committee, formerly chaired by Martinez.

Helen Sears will chair the Government Operations Committee, formerly held by Simcha Felder.

Felder will chair the Sanitation and Waste Management Committee, which was held by Mike McMahon, who left after he was elected to Congress.

James Sanders will chair the Veterans Committee (he formerly chaired the Economic Development Committee).

Darlene Mealy will chair the Women’s Issues Committee, which was chaired by Helen Sears.

And Melissa Mark-Viverito will chair the committee on “Senior Centers,” a post formerly held by Vacca.
