Governor Jon Corzine thinks David Paterson is doing well, considering.
When I asked him after a joint appearance with Paterson at the Harvard Club about the New York governor’s performance, Corzine said, “I think Governor Paterson came in at a very difficult time—in the circumstances in which he took power, in an incredibly challenging economic moment in the history of the country—and for the most part, I think he’s done very well.
“It’s easy to get off track on one or two items that draw a lot of people’s focus. He’s exactly right. He was one of the very first and most outspoken persons with regard to the economic crisis we have in the country. He has taken a very forceful view on rationalizing and modifying the budget.”
Corzine added, “People expect instant gratification for someone who has had an enormous challenge to transition into office, and it’s happening while we have this incredible economic crisis going on. So I think that criticism is just blatantly off base.”
