As expected, South Amboy Mayor Jack O'Leary will seek the Democratic nomination for State Assembly against incumbent Joseph Vas. Vas' political security has been at risk since last May, when he was defeated for re-election as Mayor of Perth Amboy. O'Leary says he's not targeting Vas, but he is – it's not about the other Democratic Assemblyman from the nineteenth district, John Wisniewski.
Vas has told Democrats he intends to seek re-election, despite winning just 39% of the vote in Perth Amboy last year. His legal troubles – federal prosecutors have seized documents pertaining to his administration – will surely be one of the issues O'Leary raises. As the longest serving Mayor in Middlesex County, O'Leary seems to be popular with Democratic leaders. He's been going door to door to meet with members of the Democratic County Committee, who will hold a convention next month to decide who gets the valuable organization line.
