Peter Bruce, a former Passaic County Freeholder and Passaic City Councilman whose career in politics ended following his criminal conviction, died last week. He was 76. Bruce’s political career began in the 1970’s and ended in 1996 when he admitted that he had failed to pay nearly $350,000 in federal income tax. He served one year in prison. Bruce was a fixture in Passaic County politics, and was nearly elected Mayor of Passaic in 1977, when he lost a runoff election. His criminal conviction was related to his family-owned construction business and not to his position as a public official.
