City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr., a law-and-order Democrat who endorsed Mayor Michael Bloomberg for re-election in 2005, said news that the 2010 police cadet class is getting cut has him reconsidering his loyalties.
“I, for one, supported the mayor because of his support of public safety, and this budget calls that into question,” Vallone said in a brief telephone interview. He declined to comment further.
Vallone, chairman of the Council public safety committee, expressed only sympathy for the city’s police commissioner, Ray Kelly, who delivered the news about the 2010 class while testifying about anti-terrorism efforts.
“The ‘09 police class was decimated in this budget and now we found out that there’s no help in 2010,” Vallone said. “Ray Kelly must feel like King Leonidas at Thermopylae.”
