ALBANY—Remember the olden days of last year, when labor unions were sending mailers attacking State Senator Ruben Diaz Sr.?

Now he's their man of the hour. SEIU 1199 is sending the flier at right into Diaz's district, thanking him for this support of a tax on higher income earners that 1199, along with many other labor groups, have been pushing. (I should note that 1199 never sent mailers against him then; that was SEIU 32BJ. But the Working Families Party is leading efforts for this income tax increase, and they put a lot of pressure on Diaz last year.)

Diaz drew attention for his willingness last year to break with Malcolm Smith as he attempted to become the chamber's Majority Leader. He's again causing problems for Smith, joining other senators in opposing any bridge tolls and frustrating quick action on the MTA's budget shortfall. A Labor Union Is Back to Praising Diaz
